Brain Food for Solopreneurs
We make our living from our brainpower. It's time to fuel it properly.
Let's talk for a moment about a health issue that solopreneurs frequently overlook.
Most solopreneurs make their living from brainpower. We’re typically knowledge workers, expending mental instead of physical energy. We’re also constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, from major to mundane.
Since it's important that we maintain peak performance in our mental capabilities, here are three ways to build your brainpower.
𝟭. 𝗣𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁.
Scientists have discovered that the brain needs as much of a workout as your other muscles. Flex your mind by checking out some free online brain puzzles or books.
Stay aware of the mental stretch as you tackle new experiences. For example, the other day I set up a new teleprompter, and I could feel the mental struggle as I sorted out all the components and settings to get it working properly. I was confident it would come together, and it was satisfying to know that my brain was actively engaged in new learning.
𝟮. 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹.
Medical professionals tell us that foods high in Omega-3s are good brain foods. Find these in fatty fish such as salmon, trout, and albacore tuna. Blueberries contain antioxidants that help brain cells communicate. Dark chocolate, with 70% or greater cocoa content, also contains brain-boosting ingredients, including flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. (As if we needed an excuse for chocolate!)
Also, if you're looking for something to get your mental energy going when you hit that afternoon slump, try a banana with a tablespoon of peanut butter instead of that candy bar. You’ll get energy-boosting potassium and magnesium from the banana, and the peanut butter’s protein will keep you from a sugar crash later.
𝟯. 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘂𝗽.
The brain is 80% water, and all that water acts as a transport mechanism for the approximately 100 billion neurons sending signals throughout your body. Not enough hydration, and the signals can't flow as quickly or easily.
Researchers at Cambridge University found that drinking water has a positive impact on particular cognitive abilities and mood states. So keep some water handy throughout the day to maintain your mental sharpness.
Maintaining peak mental performance begins with caring for the brain, which makes it all possible.
An added benefit: these simple yet effective strategies not only boost our brainpower but also contribute to our overall well-being.
Embrace these habits, and watch as your increased productivity, creativity, and problem-solving abilities help you reach new heights as a solopreneur. Here’s to healthy (and hydrated) brains!
May you have a brainy and productive week.
Thanks for being a reader and joining me on this journey of working solo!
Good collection of brain-power tips and reminders. Currently in the airport having just side-stepped a moving walkway in favor of real-time locomotion. Don't forget about exercise!
